The Age Thing on Your Online Dating
Profile
Online dating opened a whole new world and level of dating. For
many people it is easier to find a partner through an online
dating service for several reasons. These reasons include
matching due to similar hobbies, likes, interests, age and even
special requests. Online dating has also gotten very popular
due to the fact that one does not have to completely exposed.
You do not have to walk up to someone else to be able to meet
someone. Online dating means one can choose someone else due to
many factors and then get a first contact started by writing a
letter or e-mail.
Online dating also opened the possibility to display only parts
or a few facts of oneself. You can offer certain information
about yourself when you are ready. Online dating profiles allow
for any data to be used the way the user wants. One can tell
that he is 30 even though he might have just passed the big 40.
For many people the question pops up. Is it okay to change the
age detail in an online profile to be able to attract a greater
variety of partners?
First of all, this largely depends on what the user wants to do
with the online relationship that will ultimately take place.
If the relationship stays in the cyber world and never comes
into the real world, it is not one hundred percent important to
state all the facts properly. For some people, the cyber world
is a second chance life. It is more like a fantasy world and
they can be whomever they want to.
But if the online dating services are used to get into a real
world relationship and to find a partner for life or just for a
certain amount of time, any facts in the profile should be true
facts. Relationships cannot be built on lies. It is a big
difference if one is only 29 or 49. People of different ages
have different interests, different friends and hobbies. Even
if one looks very young, the difference in age will just be
apparent at some point. It might work for a first date or two,
especially if one looks younger than one is, but if the
relationship grows, so will the trust. At some point it will
happen that the partner finds out about the true age and then
other questions will come up. If the age is not right, a
partner might think about what else in the relationship is not
true. What else might not have been told and what else is based
on a lie?
Of course, it might be harder to find a greater variety of
partners once certain stages in life have been passed. Even if
more people “bite” on to a online dating profile because one
falls into the age range, once a relationship has been
established, it will be hard to keep the truth from coming out
and then looking like a lie. Additionally, most relationships
are based on a similar age range and therefore changing the
fact of age on an online dating profile might attract the
“wrong-aged” crowd.
The online dating profile is generally used to find a partner,
just as before the Internet age. The courtship and flirting
stage was used to find a partner. For many people walking up to
someone else is very hard for many different reasons, such as
shyness and wrong self-image. The Internet portal can be a
great choice to find a partner, but it is still a door into a
relationship and therefore should be treated with respect and
truthfulness.
